Mosslight: Poems

This poetry collection takes you on a walking meditation along the crooked path through loss and longing where solace shimmers in the shadows, rooted in the rhythms of the natural world.
Mosslight: Poems

Each poem is a small epiphany. Like a lost explorer—part-naturalist, part-Buddhist—the voice in this collection leads the reader deep into the present moment, “stark and lush,” reminding us that while “alone each foot burns/into cold layers” there is a larger interconnectedness, as “even in wet snow falling,/the wren sings.”

"Pittman-Schulz fully, artfully inhabits the natural world in her poetry, a world inhabited by shrews, mice, butterflies and an old calico cat, managing to move successfully beyond mere description–and her details are beautifully drawn, specific–to effortless metaphor, anchoring the images to her human world.

In much of the collection, the speaker seems to face loss and the inevitability of death, even her own, with a clear-eyed acceptance, sometimes alone, but not necessarily lonely. She admits in “Tide,” a poem about a walk along the cold Pacific beach, “When someone / you love dies, for so long / you want to follow.” Searching the natural world for some evidence of her mother’s presence, she recalls her repeated admonition, “Don’t cry.”

Throughout the collection, the speaker indicates that she has the option to find contentment and meaning in the smallest details of the world around her. "

What Readers Say . . .

 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Mosslight - A real treat.

"Recently my wife and I received "Mosslight" a beautiful book of poetry by Kimberley Pittman-Schulz. It is said that "you can't tell a book by it's cover" but in this case as you open the beautiful cover you are greeted by a jewel of a book that lives inside. Somehow Kimberley is able to convey her experiences with nature and the human spirit with a style and grace that can brings tears to your eyes. The poet gracefully expresses the oneness with nature. She relates feelings about herself and others while moving through nature's indifference. Words express joy and awe simultaneously and then she surprises the reader with deep feelings of loved ones and struggles with being human...."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Mosslight is to savor. It is for the mind's eye and spirit like a fine, complex wine is for the palate.

"If you look to poetry for its evocative qualities, Mosslight delivers. If you are drawn to nature, the outdoors, flora and fauna– in the wild and what you nurture at home, read Mosslight. I don't want to mislead you however: while it is easy to enjoy the immediate, textured environment Kimberley Pittman-Schulz creates in her poetry with apparent simple eloquence, she reveals so very much more if you are interested. For me, Mosslight reads like Kimberley's personal, private diary, starting with what she bravely shares in her very first poem, Magic. This poem is really a perfect example of what Kimberley does extremely well in her writing--she offers you a deeper truth--hers or yours; she does not force. You are not required to do any digging into the ground of these poems in order to be left feeling that reading Mosslight was time well spent. . . ."
